...Le New York Times (NYT) a affirmé vendredi que des hauts responsables de l'administration du président George Walker Bush (2000-2008) étaient intervenus pour bloquer des enquêtes menées séparément par la police fédérale américaine (FBI), le département d'Etat et le Pentagone sur le massacre de plus de 2000 prisonniers en 2001 (lire encadré), par les forces du général Abdul Rashid Dostam, soutenu alors par la CIA...

Un massacre survenu en 2001

Le général Abdul Rashid Dostam, puissant chef de guerre du nord de l'Afghanistan, a collaboré avec les Soviétiques durant leur invasion du pays dans les années 1980, avant de devenir l'un des proches alliés des Américains en 2001 pendant la campagne consécutive aux attentats du 11-Septembre, qui a conduit à la chute du régime des talibans.

La milice d'Abdul Rashid Dostam a travaillé étroitement avec les forces spéciales américaines. Le massacre en question avait eu lieu fin novembre 2001.

Plusieurs rapports accusent les miliciens du général d'avoir enfermé des centaines de prisonniers talibans dans des conteneurs, où ils ont péri asphyxiés ou abattus à travers les parois.

Des talibans victimes de crimes de guerre

L’administration de l’ancien président américain George W. Bush aurait tenté à plusieurs reprises de bloquer des enquêtes sur le massacre, fin 2001, de centaines de prisonniers talibans. Les exactions ont été commises par le chef de guerre Rachid Dostam, alors soutenu par Washington. Le président américain Barack Obama a indiqué avoir ordonné une enquête sur ces possibles blocages.(...)

Crimes de guerre

Avec ses miliciens, Dostam organise des convois pour transporter les talibans déchus vers la prison de Sheberghan, à 300 km à l’ouest de Kunduz. Durant trois jours, les détenus sont transportés dans des conteneurs, sans eau et sans nourriture. Les mains attachées dans le dos, les hommes sont entassés à plus de cent par camions. Selon l’Organisation afghane des droits de l’homme, plus de 1000 sont morts asphyxiés durant le trajet.

Une fois dans la ville de Sheberghan, les hommes de Dostam auraient abattu certains survivants à travers les parois des conteneurs. Sur les 3 000 talibans qui se sont rendus après leur défaite à Kunduz, seuls 1 000 ont survécu.

Ces actes, considérés comme crimes de guerre par l’ONG américaine Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), se seraient déroulés en présence de forces spéciales américaines, chargées à cette période de la sécurité de la prison de Sheberghan.

Les talibans tués ont ensuite été enterrés à quelques kilomètres dans une fosse commune à Dast-i-Leile, en plein désert, toujours sur les ordres de Dostam. Là encore, des témoins évoquent la présence de soldats américains qui ne seraient pas intervenus pour empêcher l’enfouissement des corps.

Des enquêtes entravées

Depuis le début de l’année 2002, l’ONG américaine PHR se bat pour qu’une enquête indépendante fasse la lumière sur ce qu’elle considère comme des crimes de guerre et sur l’éventuelle implication des forces américaines. Sur son site dédié, l’organisation publie photos et vidéos issues de ces recherches sur le terrain.

Dès août 2002, le journal Newsweek publie le récit du massacre présumé. A partir des témoignages de conducteurs de camions, de villageois afghans habitant à côté de Dast-i-Leile et même de personnels de l’ONU sous couvert d’anonymat, l’hebdomadaire américain fait état des crimes de guerre dont Abdul Rachid Dostam se serait rendu coupable. Et aux journalistes de poser la question : « Est-ce que les Etats-Unis ont une part de responsabilité dans les atrocités commises par ses alliés ? ».

En 2006, Jamie Doran, producteur irlandais, a réalisé un documentaire sur ces événements. Dans ce film, l’ancien journaliste de la BBC a interrogé militaires, responsables des Nations unies, d’ONG ainsi que des prisonniers victimes de ces exactions. Sur les lieux de la fosse commune, à Dast-I-Leile, il a filmé les ossements encore présents, non protégés par les autorités afghanes ou par les Nations unies.

Depuis leur rencontre avec Jamie Doran, deux des témoins interrogés ont depuis été tués.

Aujourd’hui, le New York Times affirme que des hauts responsables de l’administration Bush étaient intervenus pour bloquer des enquêtes menées par la Croix-Rouge et des organisations des droits de l’homme....

Des "dégâts considérables" ont été infligés au site de Babylone par les troupes américaines et leurs sous-traitants

selon le rapport final d'évaluation présenté jeudi à Paris par l'UNESCO, l'agence culturelle de l'ONU, qui compte faire inscrire d'ici deux ans la cité antique au Patrimoine mondial de l'humanité. Entre 2003 et 2004, au début de l'intervention américaine en Irak, les forces de la coalition avaient installé leur base sur le site archéologique situé à 90km au sud de la capitale, Bagdad. La capitale de Nabuchodonosor, qui y avait fait construire les fameux jardins suspendus, l'une des "sept merveilles du monde" dans l'Antiquité, était devenue le "camp Alpha".

Autant établir un "camp militaire autour de la Grande pyramide en Egypte", avait déjà dénoncé en 2005 un rapport du British Museum, rappelle l'UNESCO, l'Organisation des Nations unies pour l'éducation, la science et la culture.

Les troupes américaines et les entreprises privées travaillant avec le Pentagone, en particulier KBR, alors filiale de Halliburton, ont creusé des tranchées de plusieurs centaines de mètres au milieu des vestiges, utilisé des bulldozers et fait rouler des chars pesants sur les fragiles pavés du chemin de procession, autrefois sacré.

Le rapport final, élaboré par le sous-comité sur Babylone du Comité international de coordination pour la sauvegarde du patrimoine culturel de l'Irak de l'UNESCO (ICC-Irak), "établit une description des dégâts qui fait l'objet d'un accord international". Il constate que "la ville archéologique a subi d'importants dégâts dus à des travaux de creusement, percement, arasement et nivelage", selon l'UNESCO.

Parmi les principales structures endommagées "figurent la porte d'Ishtar et le chemin de procession". L'archéologue John Curtis du British Museum a inspecté le site en 2004 juste avant que les soldats américains ne le restituent au Conseil des antiquités et du patrimoine irakien (SBAH) face à l'indignation internationale. D'après lui, neuf des dragons sculptés dans la porte d'Ishtar, vieille de 2.600 ans, ont été vandalisés par des pillards quand le site était sous contrôle des Américains.

Site archéologique depuis 1935, la capitale des rois Hammourabi et Nabuchodonosor, cité vieille de 4.000 ans, a subi nombre d'outrages à travers le temps. Au XIXe siècle, les archéologues européens avaient arraché des murs nombre des plus célèbres oeuvres, encore visibles aujourd'hui dans des musées du Vieux continent.

Entre 1978 et 1987 de grands projets de restauration avaient été entrepris, des équipements modernes étant introduits. A son "grand détriment", le site avait ensuite subi des "travaux d'aménagement majeurs" pour la construction d'un nouveau palais du président Saddam Hussein. Enfin, le site a été pillé lors de la guerre en 2003 et a servi de base aux soldats américains.

Depuis sa restitution aux Irakiens, le site a encore été victime de pillages et du marché noir. Mais le Dr Curtis a jugé "encourageant" de constater qu'il n'existe aucun signe de dégâts causés de manière intentionnelle ou accidentelle au site" depuis décembre 2004.

A l'heure actuelle, les problèmes majeurs sont ainsi liés "à la négligence et au manque d'entretien", a-t-il expliqué lors d'une conférence de presse. "Tous les édifices restaurés de Babylone sont en mauvais état, en particulier les temples de Ninmah, de Nabû sa hare et d'Ishtar, les maisons babyloniennes et le palais sud de Nabuchodonosor", sur lesquels il faut "intervenir d'urgence".

D'après les auteurs du rapport, l'étendue des dommages est telle qu'il est encore trop tôt pour évaluer la somme nécessaire pour restaurer et pleinement protéger le site, selon le Dr Curtis et les experts.

Remédiera-t-on jamais à l'immense saccage de la soldatesque américaine en Mésopotamie ?

A stinging attack by John Hartigan, the CEO of Rupert Murdoch’s News Limited, labels bloggers and alternative media outlets as “political extremists”. Hartigan implies that bloggers should be jailed as they are in oppressive police states like China and Burma.

In a speech to the National Press Club, Hartigan savagely dismissed blogs as, “Something of such little intellectual value as to be barely discernible from massive ignorance.”

“Bloggers don’t go to jail for their work. They simply aren’t held accountable like real reporters….It could be said the blogosphere is all eyeballs and no insights,” barked Hartigan.

“In the blogosphere, of course, the mainstream media is always found wanting. It really is time this myth was blown apart.”

“Blogs, and a large number of comment sites, specialise in political extremism and personal vilification. Radical sweeping statements without evidence are common.”

Hartigan doesn’t seem to grasp the fact that the mainstream media is always found wanting because they habitually lie about news events and spin stories to suit the demands of their corporate owners. This is the very reason why blogs and alternative media outlets have become so popular and have eaten into the mainstream media’s audience share, because people are sick of being treated like idiots, sick of being lied to, and are desperately in search of the truth.

Indeed, Hartigan’s boss Rupert Murdoch confessed to the fact that his media empire tried to shape public opinion to support the war in Iraq In other words, Murdoch’s many prominent news outlets wantonly put out propaganda supporting the manufactured case for invasion. Murdoch admitted to this while lamenting the corporate media’s “loss of power” to alternative media and Internet blogs, seemingly unaware of the fact that the two are directly connected.

When the people know that the corporate media is deliberately lying to them about Niger yellowcake and weapons of mass destruction, they are going to seek alternative avenues of information. The fact that the corporate media habitually lies is a manifestly provable reality, not a “myth” as Hartigan ludicrously claims.

In addition, while mainstream media routinely uses anonymous sources and little more than bluster and hot air to back up their stories, blogs provide links to almost every claim they make so readers can research the source evidence for themselves. This is the opposite from Hartigan’s claim that blogs make “radical sweeping statements without evidence.” Indeed, this phrase perfectly characterizes tactics employed by the mass media on a daily basis.

The corporate media monopoly has terminal cancer and they are losing their power to blogs and alternative media, which is why people like Hartigan are so angry and also why the establishment is aggressively moving to phase out the old Internet altogether and replace it with “Internet 2,” a highly regulated and controlled electronic Berlin wall, where alternative voices will be silenced and giant corporate propaganda organs will dominate once again.

As blogger Darryl Mason writes today, “John Hartigan is full of shit. Bloggers have gone to jail for their work, and to protect their sources, in North Korea, Iran, Egypt, the list of countries persecuting bloggers grows longer by the week. And the CEO of Australia’s biggest news corporation doesn’t know this?”

The jailing of bloggers for speaking too much truth is obviously not the kind of news that John Hartigan, a Rupert Murdoch CEO, is interested in. How could he not know about those jailing and prosecutions.

Remember those words. “Political extremism”.

You will hear that call more and more as the major news corporations scale up their war against independent media, and bloggers.

The source of the establishment’s move to claim that bloggers and alternative media outlets are “extremists” or at worst “terrorists,” as we first reported in September 2006, was a White House strategy document that the government had been following since 9/11.

In a September 5, 2006 speech President George W. Bush referred to the document as “an unclassified version of the strategy we’ve been pursuing since September the 11th, 2001,” that takes into account, “the changing nature of this enemy.”

The strategy paper on how to ‘win the war on terror’ cites “conspiracies” as one of the wellsprings of terrorism and threatens to “address” and “diminish” the problems they are causing the government in fulfilling their agenda.

This notion then reappeared in a March 2009 Homeland Security document entitled “Domestic Extremism Lexicon,” in which the “alternative media” is listed alongside other radical extremist groups with the implication that people who disagree with the mass media’s version of events are potential domestic terrorists.

According to World Net Daily, the DHS document was almost immediately rescinded, but the groups listed alongside Neo-Nazis, Aryan prison gangs and black power extremists again prove that the federal government is targeting American citizens who are merely knowledgeable about their rights and up on current issues as potential domestic terrorists to be treated as a “threat” to law enforcement.

Paul J. Balles cautions against the warmongering growls of Paul Wolfowitz, the architect of the aggression against Iraq and a man of dual loyalty to Israel and the USA, who is now calling for American interference in Iran’s internal affairs.

The Washington Post published an Op-Ed piece (19 June) by Paul Wolfowitz, the man more responsible than others in the previous US administration for unjustified death and destruction in Iraq.

Bernard Weiner, writing in the Crisis Papers reveals that in 1992, then-Secretary of Defence Dick Cheney had a strategy report drafted for the Department of Defence, written by Paul Wolfowitz, who was then the under-secretary of defence for policy.

In it, the US government was urged, as the world's sole remaining superpower, to move aggressively and militarily around the globe. The report called for pre-emptive attacks and ad hoc coalitions, but said that the US should be ready to act alone when "collective action cannot be orchestrated."

Weiner wrote: “Wolfowitz outlined plans for military intervention in Iraq as an action necessary to assure ‘access to vital raw material, primarily Persian Gulf oil’ and to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and threats from terrorism.”

This last part was the key to the Wolfowitz doctrine. Israel had as its agent provocateur Paul Wolfowitz to justify occupation of Iraq as permanent protection against WMDs.

"For bureaucratic reasons we settled on one issue, weapons of mass destruction, because it was the one reason everyone could agree on." said Wolfowitz, in an interview in the magazine Vanity Fair.

In his latest Washington Post article, Wolfowitz started off with a hawkish remark about how, "President Obama's first response to the protests in Iran was silence, followed by a cautious, almost neutral stance designed to avoid 'meddling' in Iranian affairs".

Instead of criticizing Barack Obama’s prudent response to the events in Iran, the uncompromising warmonger Wolfowitz should be having nightmares over the 1,331,578 Iraqis slaughtered since the US invaded Iraq, and the 4,315 US military personnel sacrificed in that war.

Wolfowitz now wants Obama to interfere in the election conflict in Iran, an event that's nobody's business but the Iranians’. Other hawks in Washington have undoubtedly been encouraged to call Obama timid or weak. James Mann referred to Wolfowitz as "...the most influential underling in Washington".

In the Washington Post, Wolfowitz wrote: "...the reform the Iranian demonstrators seek is something that we should be supporting. In such a situation, the United States does not have a 'no comment' option". On the contrary, it’s the only sensible option.

Wolfowitz added: "Coming from America, silence is itself a comment – a comment in support of those holding power and against those protesting the status quo." This kind of thinking behind America's imperialism has done nothing but breed enemies for America.

According to Wolfowitz, "It would be a cruel irony if, in an effort to avoid imposing democracy, the United States were to tip the scale toward dictators who impose their will on people struggling for freedom".

What gives the US a right to "impose democracy" on any country or to decide what should be done about those "who impose their will on people struggling for freedom?"

Adding insult to injury, Wolfowitz growls: "And if we appear so desperate for negotiations that we will abandon those who support our principles, we weaken our own negotiating hand."

The reality is that Wolfowitz has no interest in negotiations of any sort. He has been called “Wolfowitz of Arabia” in jest by the New York Times’ Maureen Dowd, and, with respect, “the intellectual godfather of the war ... its heart and soul” by Time’s Mark Thompson. If the war on Iraq is anybody’s war, it is Paul Wolfowitz’s.

It’s past time to end arrogant interference in the name of America.
